Downloading Membership Data CSV

Due to unfortunate abuse, the Church has generally disabled the ability to download membership data in CSV (Excel) format. Church technical support will tell you that this feature is completely disabled. That’s not quite true. Stake clerks (and ONLY stake clerks) have this ability. Here is how to download Membership data in CSV, after you have received authorization from your Stake President.

1. Log in to LDS.org

Hopefully you know how to do this step.

2. Go to the Directory

Click Directory, then choose the ward you wish to export, then click the “Export Households” link.

Only Stake Clerks will see the “Export Households” function.

3. You Must Download Each Ward Separately

The church makes it really hard to export data, and you must export each ward individually. Clicking on “Stake Information” will give you no membership data. If you have 10 units, you will need to do 10 downloads.

4. Yes, I will Use it Only as Directed

I care about privacy a lot (I’m a privacy attorney). I will use the data only as directed, and destroy it after about a month. Someday I’d really like to build a Crisis Caller API so that zero membership data ever leaves church servers, and you view the map through lds.org/maps. But I can’t do that today.

5. Save the Files. Do not Open.

You will be prompted to either save or open the file. Click “Save” or “Save as…,” depending on your browser. Be sure to save the files in a place you know; do not open them. Warning: The files might automatically download to a default folder, such as your “downloads” folder.

6. Email to aaron [at] crisiscleanup.org

Attach the files to an email, and put the name of the stake in the subject line.

Crisis Caller: Example Script

Here is the script your members will hear when they pick up the phone:

  1. On behalf of your stake president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are calling to see how the hurricane has affected you. We may not be able to help, but we will try. The information you give will be shared with church and civic leaders. If you are having an emergency, hang up and dial 911.
  2. If you are safe and have no damage, press 0.
  3. If your power is out, press 1.
    • How much stress is the power outage causing? On a scale from 0-9, press 0 if you have no stress or complications, and 9 if you have extreme stress or complications.
  4. If you have evacuated, press 2.
    • Be sure to leave a message with your location. On a scale from 1-9, where 1 means “safe,” and 9 is “very unsafe,” how safe are you?
  5. If your home is flooding, press 3.
    • How many feet of water are in your home? Press the number on your phone.
  6. If you have downed trees, press 4.
    • How many trees are down? Press the number on your phone.
  7. If you have other damage, press 5.
    • On a scale from 1-9, how much damage have you experienced, where 1 is minor damage and 9 is extreme damage?
  8. To hear this message again, press star.
  9. [After entering data] Your entry has been recorded. If you would like to leave a public message with more details, press 1. If not, you may hang up. Thank you, and please stay safe.
    • Press 1 to accept your message. Press 2 to listen to it. Press 3 to re-record it. Thank you for sharing this important information with us. Please stay safe. Goodbye.
